I just had XP kill itself, so I loaded Ubuntu (hint: 'recover' disks shipped with hardware should not start by formatting the entire hd ... since the recover disk would not save my data, I let Ubuntu have the honors).

I'm glad that neko posted the response above. I wouldn't have known the answer because I've never had a need for vertical text but I'd like to point out that the reason OO can't handle some of those funky formatting quirks in MS-Office is because MSFT has got the code all tied up in legal knots.

The key? Compose your documents in OO. OO document formats are public. If MSO can't read them, it's because MSFT did a bad job of coding.(See also CSS in MSIE).

Thanks Neko ... now, could you drop by my buddy's house and explain to him that Linux has plenty of quality software? He's afraid someone will catch him shopping at Freshmeat.

If you want the text vertical or diagonal, click on the text box, right-click and choose Position and Size, click the Rotation tab, and in the Rotation field type the number of degrees. (You can also click on a point in the Default Settings region.) 55 degrees is good for a diagonal watermark.

I agree with zero-kill. I attempted to use OpenOffice to update some Word documents and the formating was totally off - including an apparent lack of ability to do vertical text (unless I missed it).

Only bad part is that some (but not all) formatting that comes from the real office software won't convert into Openoffice.org, personally I use both at home, just because I'm one of those bored people with nothing better to do, plus I'm a beta-tester for oh so many products.
